Zambia is the home of true African bliss. Its natural beauty and plethora of attractions combine to make a holiday destination that will stay in visitors’ hearts forever. Be it the tranquility of the Zambezi River or the true majesty of the Victoria Falls, the natural beauty of Zambia is matched only by the activities it offers. Visitors can enjoy a Zambezi river cruise, explore Zambia’s many national parks, embark on a fishing excursion or simply relax at a variety of world-class accommodation. Let East Cape Tours help you discover all that Zambia has to offer!
The visiting-season in Zambia is very short as most of the lodges only operate in the dry season, from April through to November. Many of the lodges are also seasonal, meaning they are built from scratch every year. On account of the short season, accommodation prices in Zambia are often quite high. We suggest that guests mix the expensive safaris with more reasonable options in order to make the entire holiday affordable.
We have some fantastic and reasonably priced accommodation in the Victoria Falls area, as well as some great adventure packages. The two-day Victoria Falls adventure package includes a sunset cruise aboard the African Queen, a choice of safari (canoe, river or fishing), a Microlight or helicopter flight, and a guided walking tour of Victoria Falls. The three-day adventure package includes all of the same activities, as well as the choice of a Chobe Day Trip, Livingstone Island Tour or elephant interaction and ride. These packages require a minimum of two people.
Old Mondoro along the Zambezi River is a fantastic way to end off a Zambian trip on a high. The safari lodge is the most intimate and private camp, offering accommodation in only eight luxury rooms and overlooking a maze of hippo-inhabited islands. The lodge is completely unfenced and totally wild. Old Mondoro is the jewel of Zambia and we recommend any guest visiting the country stay here for a spell.
A Week on the Wildside is the ideal Zambian safari for those who are on a limited budget but who still want to enjoy a top-class safari experience with no compromise on levels of guiding, wildlife viewing and comfort. The trip consists of seven nights spent between three of Norman Carr Safaris’ camps. The exact itinerary is decided two weeks before travel, but we guarantee a smooth-running safari. The unique opportunity allows safari-goers to enjoy a substantial discount in return for flexibility on their itinerary. It allows us to maximise bookings for smaller camps, and as there is no single supplement it is ideal for single travellers. The offer includes the shoulder season and can be booked at any time.
Guided Victoria Falls Day Tours will show you the Falls and Devil’s Cataract, and allow you to walk through the rain forest. You can also picnic on Livingstone Island if you are visiting Zambia in the ‘low water’ season (mid July to end of January). The island is accessed by boat as it is in the middle of the Zambezi River. Right at the top of the Falls is the ‘Devil’s swimming pool’, where you can actually swim (if you dare) from September to December. Swimmers can go right up to the edge of the Falls! Maybe even attempt a climb up to the Devil’s Arm Chair.
Moon Tours are magical experiences not to be missed. Moon tours show visitors the rare natural phenomenon of the dramatic lunar rainbow, or moonbow. This phenomenon occurs for three nights each month – on Full Moon, and for the nights before and after Full Moon.
Get perhaps the most stunning view of the Victoria Falls from higher up. Microlight and helicopter flights are available, taking their passengers right over the cascading water. From a height, the views are absolutely breathtaking – an ultimate Falls experience. The microlights are also fitted with cameras that are operated by the pilots during your flight, and the images captured can be purchased once you are back on the ground.
Horse safaris are another way to experience the splendor of the majestic Victoria Falls, and to explore the lush wilderness that surrounds it. Trails are followed from the Falls Resort through the National Park, offering stunning views of the Victoria Falls, as well as the chance of spotting game. For something different, try taking a ride in the Victorian-style horse-drawn carriages that will transport you to a bygone era of style and elegance.
A more exhilarating ride through the natural surroundings can be achieved on quad bikes. You will never experience more four-wheeled fun in any other location. The all-terrain quad bikes are ideal for novice or expert riders, and trips vary from bush-track riding to quad eco safaris. At the same time as enjoying the thrilling ride, you will experience the local village life, panoramic views and wildlife.
There are an endless number of ways to enjoy the Zambezi River. The African Queen is the ultimate cruise experience. Just upstream of Victoria Falls, this gorgeous boat takes guests for daily morning, lunch and sunset cruises for spectacular views of the Zambezi and the surrounding game reserves. River safaris offer a quicker way to move over the water and can reach more remote areas. The unique, propeller-free safari boats will let you experience the wide, winding river and the myriad of islands and narrow channels above the Falls – the best part of the Zambezi! Get even closer to nature on a guided canoe safari that will take you along the Zambezi, and past crossing elephants and hippo pools. Various game can be spotted wandering to the edge of the river as well. Canoeing the Zambezi is truly one of the most exciting and rewarding activities in all of Africa!
You can’t go wrong with a fishing excursion on the Zambezi River, as it offers one of the most exciting and challenging experiences for avid anglers: an opportunity to catch the prized Tiger Fish! Rated by many sports anglers as the finest freshwater fighting fish in the world, this powerful and swift predator is sure to give you a run for your money.
If you are seriously adventurous, then white water rafting or river boarding will be just your thing. River boarding allows you to swim the rapids and surf the waves equipped with only an oversized bodyboard, wetsuit, flippers and helmet! River boarding is combined with rafting so that a larger section of river can be travelled. White water rafting can be an activity on its own as well, and is certainly an exhilarating experience like no other. Choose to ride the waves for a few hours, or an entire day that will end up with you camping alongside the river for the night with your guides.
Experience the heights of the Victoria Falls’ landscape with a bungee jump, bridge swing, bridge slide or all three. The bungee jumping and bridge swings are adrenaline-pumping activities for adventure seekers; however, the bridge slide is a calmer experience, and lots of fun for anyone from the age of six. These activities make use of the historical Victoria Bridge that offers spectacular views of the Victoria Falls.
Experience all that Victoria Falls has to offer from the Sunset Steam Train or the Victoria Tram. The steam train travels for approximately two and a half hours, and features two museum dining cars, two first-class lounge coaches and a cocktail bar. The train stops on the Victoria Bridge, where passengers can disembark and take a walk. Breakfast is also served while the train is stationary. A variety of train journeys at different times are available. The tram trips include a full Historic Bridge Tour.
Play a round of golf at the Elephant Hills Golf Club, where you may come across several natural and alive obstacles! Wild antelope, warthog and even the odd elephant roam this gorgeous 18-hole championship course that was designed by Gary Player.
Nature lovers will have an absolutely magical time in Zambia. The Elephant back safaris are especially popular, and in addition to actually riding the elephants, you can also book an interactive experience with them. You will spend about three hours getting to know these giants on a very personal level. The Lion walks are a unique experience. For an hour guests walk freely with a pride of lions that are not collared or leashed in any way. This is an amazing opportunity to share the life of such a famous African predator. Rhino walks can also be arranged; however, if you prefer not to walk, a game drive would be ideal.
Crocodiles of all sizes can be seen at the Crocodile Farm (Victoria Falls Nature Sanctuary). Guided tours are available, and feeding time is a highlight of the visit. You may even be lucky enough to see some babies hatching. Croc-diving is another popular adrenaline-rush activity in Zambia. This is one way to get really up close and personal with these incredible reptiles. No diving experience is required and you will go into the water in a cage.
