Flatdogs Camp offers relaxed atmospheres, great game viewing, great guides, delicious foods and stunning locations all at sensible prices.
Flatdogs Camp is situated within the South Luangwa National Park, one of the last great wildlife wonders of the world. The park stretches over 9 000 square kilometres of pristine wilderness in Zambia’s Eastern Province, and has been visited by wildlife enthusiasts from all over the world since its creation in 1972. The Luangwa offers a safari experience unmatched by any other destination, allowing year round access, open game viewing vehicles, walking safaris and night game drives.
The safari guides of Flatdogs Camp are of the highest standard, having passed the challenging South Luangwa Guide Exam. They are ready to show you the incredible diversity of Zambian mammals, both large and small, as well as our trees, birds, insects, tracks, spoor and even fish.
At Flatdogs Camp we pride ourselves on offering accommodation to rival the up-market lodges, at a fraction of the cost. Our accommodation options include luxurious and spacious Chalet Rooms, our unique Jackalberry Tree House, en suite Safari Tents with stunning views and the brand new and much talked about Crocodile Nest.
Each drive or walk is accompanied by a fully-qualified guide, and for the drives a fully-equipped 4×4 Toyota Land Cruiser with radio so they are in contact with Flatdogs Camp in case of emergency. Most of our vehicles can carry nine guests but we limit numbers to six per vehicle unless larger groups or families prefer to go out together. Our morning drives leave camp at 0600 hours and last for at least four hours. Night drives depart at 1600 hours and return at around 2015 hours when the National Park is closed to all vehicles. Private self-drive vehicles may enter the Park from 0600-1800 hours daily.
Between 1st June and 31st October each year (and for a few weeks either side, depending on rainfall) we are able to offer walking safaris. These are a fascinating, more detailed view of the park ecology and of the wildlife as well as a chance to dive more deeply into dung, or ultimately to track game on foot either using spoor or with a little help from birds and animals who “alarm” in the presence of predators.

Zambezi Sands River Camp Reviews
“Absolute heaven. I stayed in a stunning tent on the river. The tent was massive and beautiful. The food was fantastic and the staff incredible. Everyone knew my name which made me feel valued and at home. It is right near the park gate. The game drives where excellent. I’ve done numerous safaris and the guides at Flatdogs are the most knowledgeable I’ve ever come across. I loved every minute of it – thank you Jess and Aiden and the whole team.” –KRI001
“We loved Flatdogs! We stayed in the family chalet, which was very comfortable and attractive and nights were made thrilling by the honking of hippos nearby! You have to wave a torch outside the door to be escorted to the bar/restaurant – adds to the adventure! The food was really excellent and varied. We thoroughly enjoyed the lovely pool area and its beautiful riverside setting. Game drives were superb. Although the camp is not in the park itself, it is very close to the gate and the dawn drive over the river is lovely. Animals do still roam the camp: there were elephants and giraffes while we were there (in addition to the resident hippos!)” –perdita947
“We stayed 3 nights at the beginning of a 2 week trip to the South Luangwa. This was an excellent introduction to the wildlife and we saw lots of wildlife and wild dogs on 2 days. We did an excellent full day safari in the northern area which is highly recommended. The food was really good and the variety of choice excellent and great to eat whenever you wanted.” –susanbO9070QQ
